Head Injuries and Car Accidents

Being involved in an auto accident is extremely stressful and can result in serious injury.

One of the most vulnerable parts of the human body is the head, and car accidents are the number one culprit when it comes to head injuries in America.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States.  Over 5.3 million people are living with complications and disabilities as a result of head injuries. In addition, 50,000 people die every year from TBI and approximately 230,000 people are hospitalized.

Oftentimes, traumatic brain injury can be misdiagnosed and victims must live with complications they do not understand.  If you have been involved in an auto accident, even one that seems relatively minor, make certain you are checked out thoroughly by a medical expert.

What is a head injury?
According to Enjuris Personal Injury Guide states:

Traumatic brain injuries are caused by injury to the head from bruising, tearing, twisting + bleeding brain tissue that results in cognitive dysfunction. Take a car accident, for instance: If a car is traveling at 45 miles per hour and hits another vehicle, it will go from 45 miles per hour to zero in an instant. The brain, which is floating in cerebral fluid, will be propelled against the hard bone of the skull with the force of this impact because of whiplash; brain tissue will 'squish' against the interior of the skull, blood vessels will burst and blood will stream into areas of the brain where it's not supposed to be.

The “external physical force” referred to above can be hitting your head on the steering wheel or air bag.  Most head injuries are considered a closed injury, also known as a CHI. This means that you may not be able to see the injury, but trauma inside the brain causes a variety of different medical issues.

Symptoms of TBI
Signs of traumatic brain injury can be physical, emotional and cognitive.  These symptoms do not happen to all people suffering from a head injury.  A person may deal with only one or two of these symptoms, while another individual may suffer from all of them.  If you or a loved one were recently in an auto accident and are experiencing one of the following symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Fatigue and balance issues
  • Slowed or slurred speech
  • Double vision
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Seizures
  • Muscle spasms
  • Short or long term memory loss
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Communication issues
  • Poor judgment and organizational problems
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Impulsive and egocentric behaviors
  • Easily agitated
