Colorado Car Accidents On the Rise: Here Are 4 Reasons Why

January 8, 2018

factors leading to a rise in Colorado car accidents

Between 2014 and 2016, there was a 24% increase in the number of car accident fatalities in Colorado. This significant jump in auto accidents and crash fatalities can partially be contributed to a population increase; Colorado was the second-fastest growing state in the U.S. during the same years, according to population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

However, there are a few other factors that many believe are playing a role.

1. Distracted Driving

Distracted driving has always been one of the most common causes of accidents, especially in those that result in fatalities. In this day, however, driving distracted has become even easier. Anything from texting to putting on makeup to noisy children in the backseat can contribute to a distracted driving accident.

2. Bad Weather

Colorado is no stranger to turbulent weather, including large amounts of snow and rain in higher elevations. Weather conditions can make roads unsafe, leading to higher accident rates. If you’re unsure about driving in harsh conditions, stay home or pull over to the side of the road.

3. Speeding

Everyone pushes the speed limit from time to time; however, doing so can increase your risk of a serious or fatal car accident. This is especially true in more rural areas where it may seem that traveling at higher speeds is “no big deal.”

4. Driving Drunk

The deadly effects of drunk driving can be felt in every area of the country, including Colorado. When impaired by alcohol or marijuana, drivers are more likely to cause or be involved in a serious accident. While the percentage of accidents to which drunk driving contributes is still very high, the number has actually decreased in recent years nationwide.

If you or someone you love has been involved in a serious car accident, don’t leave your recovery compensation up to chance. Colorado car accident attorneys at The Babcock Law Firm are prepared to help you receive the funds you deserve. Contact us today for a free consultation.
