A recent study by Pinnacol Assurance, a workers’ compensation insurance company in Colorado, revealed the most common ways and times that Colorado workers are injured on the job.
Here are some of the most interesting statistics that were discovered.
Occupations with high personal injury rates
This is hardly a surprise considering the nature of these jobs. However, certain patterns came to light when the types of injuries were looked at.
Most common work injuries
Muscle strains were the most common injury across the board for Colorado workers, particularly for the back. Other common injuries include harm to the fingers, hands, knees, eyes and wrists, especially by construction workers.
Other sorts of injuries that ranked highly included slips and falls on ice for clerical workers and blows from patients for healthcare employees.
When injuries at work occurred
The Pinnacol study found that between 38-44 percent of work injuries for construction workers and healthcare employees took place during an employee’s first year on the job.
In addition, the hours immediately before and after lunch were the most common times of day to be injured. According to Pinnacol director Jill McMillen, this is due to changes in blood sugar and the fact that many employees don’t hydrate correctly.
