Potential Salmonella Contamination Prompts Colorado Parsley Recall

Risk of salmonella contamination and food poisoning has prompted the recall of over 1000 cases of parsley shipped to 10 different states, including Colorado.

This new recall affects cases of 60-count bunched parsley. All told, there were 1005 cases of fresh parsley shipped to Arizona (10 cases), California (574 cases), Colorado (35 cases), Florida (60 cases), Illinois (1 case), Iowa (3 cases), Missouri (7 cases), Tennessee (5 cases), Texas (278 cases) and Wisconsin (12 cases) by Muranaka Farm, Inc.

No injuries or illnesses have been reported as a result of this contaminated parsley…the recall occurred as a result of a voluntary sampling program between Muranaka and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration that revealed the parsley contained the salmonella bacteria.

Containers the recalled parsley came in include a silhouette of parsley on the side and a lot code of 0023909.

“The health of all consumers is of the utmost importance to every employee of our company. With that in mind, even though this product is over two weeks old and most likely past the useable shelf life, we have taken immediate actions to ensure that all product is accounted for and out of the supply chain. We are working with all of our customers to insure this product is no longer being distributed.” said Greg Emi, President, Muranaka Farm, Inc.

A trace program has allowed the company to determine the number of contaminated cases harvested, what field they were grown in, where they were shipped and who bought them.

Salmonella is a bacterium that attacks the gastrointestinal tract, causing mild to severe food poisoning. Symptoms in healthy adults include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Most recover within a few days or weeks.

Salmonella poisoning can be fatal for young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

And if you have fallen ill in connection with salmonella outbreaks in Colorado, contact your Colorado personal injury attorneys at Babcock Tucker to discuss any legal options that may be available to you.
