Salmonella Illnesses Prompt Massive Recall of Eggs

Circulating in the news lately has been reports of a spike in salmonella cases. Epidemiologic and traceback information indicates these illnesses probably originated from several chicken farms in the Midwest.

Wright Eggs 18-cartonTherefore, a massive recall of nearly ½ billion eggs from Wright County Farms is affecting consumers in several states, including Colorado.

Tainted eggs shipped to wholesalers and grocers in Colorado were sold in 6, 12 and 18-count cartons under the following labels: Albertsons, Farm Fresh, James Farms, Glenview, Mountain Dairy, Ralphs, Boomsma, Lund, Kemps and Pacific Coast. Affected cartons have Julian dates from 136 to 229 and plant numbers 1720 and 1942.

You should be able to see the plant numbers on the cartons just past the letter “P” with the Julian date coming right after that.

Many of the affected states, including Colorado, have reported a spike in salmonella cases, specifically those of the Salmonella Enteritidis variety. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, this strain cannot be identified as precisely as other forms of salmonella.

From May 1st to July 31st of this year, the CDC reported 1,953 salmonella cases like these. To compare, only around 700 cases have occurred on average during the same time period in the past 5 years. But considering the CDC estimates that only 1 in 38.5 people who contract salmonella are reported, as many as 50,000 people could have potentially fallen ill because of the tainted eggs from Wright County Farms.

Salmonella is actually a bacteria that attacks your gastrointestinal tract. Most healthy adults are able to recover within a few days or weeks. Young children, the elderly and individual with compromised immune systems are especially susceptible to salmonella food poisoning…in some instances, it can prove fatal.

Second Egg RecallSince this announcement last Friday, other eggs have been added to the recall. While none of these are said to have been distributed in Colorado, you could have them in your possession too. These include eggs under the brand names of Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms, Sunny Meadow, Wholesome Farms and West Creek. These packages have the following plant numbers and Julian dates:

P1860 – Julian production numbers range from 099 to 230
P1663 – Julian production numbers range from 137 to 230

If you have any of these eggs in your possession, return them to the store immediately for a full refund. And if you’ve fallen ill because of salmonella tainted eggs or some other defective product, contact Denver personal injury attorneys at Babcock Tucker today for a free consultation.
